چکیده

—Little information exists on nesting by seabirds and coastal waterbirds in Panamá. The present study of the Gulf of Chiriquí complements our previous study of nesting waterbirds of the Gulf of Panamá. In April 2012, about 4,000 nests of seven species of seabirds and other colonial waterbirds were identified during a complete survey by small plane and boat within and adjacent to the Gulf of Chiriquí. Seventeen colony sites were found, 12 of which are reported here for the first time. Nesting species included Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster; the most abundant species with nearly 2,500 nests), Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis), Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens), Bridled Tern (Onychoprion anaethetus; second nesting site for Panamá), Wood Stork (Mycteria americana; third nesting site for Panamá), Great Egret (Ardea alba), and Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis). The largest nesting site in the Gulf of Chiriquí was the Islas Ladrones, with 2,200 Brown Booby nests (the largest site for this species in Panamá) and 130 Magnificent Frigatebird nests. Unlike most of the sites found in this study, these islands are not currently officially protected. Received 17 April 2014, accepted 22 June 2014.

Selection of nesting habitat of hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) in two coral islands of Qeshm and Hengam in the Persian Gulf, Iran

The Persian Gulf islands are the nesting regions for the severely endangered hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) species. Therefore, the selection of the nesting habitat of this species in the two islands of Qeshm and Hengam was studied by a five-member working group in the spring of 2013 - 2015. Ultimately, 23 and 17 nests were identified in the south of Qeshm Island and in the south and...

Movements and Habitat-Use of Loggerhead Sea Turtles in the Northern Gulf of Mexico during the Reproductive Period

Nesting strategies and use of important in-water habitats for far-ranging marine turtles can be determined using satellite telemetry. Because of a lack of information on habitat-use by marine turtles in the northern Gulf of Mexico, we used satellite transmitters in 2010 through 2012 to track movements of 39 adult female breeding loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) tagged on nesting beaches at ...

Population genetic structure of the white sardine, Sardinella albella, in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman by analysis of mitochondrial control region

Several studies on the white sardine: Sardinella albella, have focused on the identification of stock composition and behavior. In this study population genetic structure and historical demography of S. albella along the cost of the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman were investigated with a 500-bp segment of mt-DNA control region. In total 40 samples were collected from 3 locations: Jask in Sea of O...

Birds of the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel: their current status and key environmental issues.

The Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel encompass a number of designated sites supporting populations of waterbirds and seabirds that are of national or international importance, including the Severn Estuary and Burry Inlet Special Protection Areas (SPAs)/Ramsar Sites and Carmarthen Bay, the UK's first marine SPA. Here, we provide an overview of the present numbers and trends of the waterbirds a...

Metallothionein biosynthesis as a detoxification mechanism of heavy metals (Hg,Cd,Pb,Cu,Zn) in green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas)

In this study, heavy metals (Hg,Cd,Pb,Cu,Zn) and metallothionein (MT) biosynthesis were measured in blood of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) nesting on the northern coast of the Sea of Oman. Heavy metals concentrations in the sea water, the sediments, the blood samples ranged between 0.02-8.43 μg/l, 0.06-10.32 μg/l, and 0.16-36.78μg/g (ww), respectively. The highest concentration...
